Your data

Data Ownership

Effective June 27, 2026

Your family story belongs to your family — not to us. This page explains exactly what we mean by that, in plain language.

You own your tree

Every name, date, photo, and story you add is yours. We hold it on your behalf, not the other way around.

We never sell your data

Your family data is not a product. We will never sell, license, or trade it to advertisers, data brokers, or genealogy databases.

No public database

Geneviva is private and invite-only by design. Your tree will never appear in a public search result or shared genealogy index.

You can leave anytime

Export your tree at any time. Delete your account and all data immediately. No lock-in, no ransom.

What "ownership" means practically

  • You control access. Only people you invite can see your tree. You can revoke access at any time.
  • You control content. Add, edit, or remove anything in your tree at any time.
  • You control deletion. Request full deletion via our Delete Data page. Deletion is immediate upon confirmation.
  • You control exports. Download your family tree data in a standard format at any time from your account settings.

Our license to your content

To operate the service, we need a limited technical license to store and display your content to you and your invited family members. That's it. We do not claim any rights beyond that. We do not train AI models on your family data. We do not analyze it for advertising.

What happens if Geneviva closes

If we ever wind down the service, we will give you at least 90 days' notice and a way to export all of your data before the service goes offline. Your family history should never be held hostage by a startup's fate.
